About the Department

The geology department of Dibru college first established in 1994 with Higher Secondary course. The Geology Department at Dibru College, Dibrugarh, Assam, aims to impart quality education in Earth Sciences. It is dedicated to nurturing students’ intellectual growth and preparing them for successful careers in geosciences and related fields. . The three year degree general course was started w.e.f. 1999-2000 session with permission from Dibrugarh University vide memo no. DU/RG/IC/Perm/2000/267-71 dated24.6.2000. Accordingly Government of Assam, Higher Education department conveyed concurrence to the permission for starting degree general course vide letter no. B(2)H.39/2001/14 dated 19th March 2001.The major course was started from the academic session 2017-2018 by granting permission from Dibrugarh University vide order no DU/RG/DCDC/DC/Perm(Major)/2017-2018/9738 dated 14.06.2017. The department consists of qualified academic staff. It also has a well equipped laboratory with numerable microscopes, rocks, minerals and fossil sample, slides, maps, and a projector.

  • Mission: To produce skilled geologists with a strong ethical foundation who can address societal and global challenges related to Earth sciences.

  • Faculty members have published research on regional geology and contributed to national and international journals.
  • The department has been recognized for its active participation in geological conferences and student-driven initiatives like science exhibitions and community awareness programs on environmental issues.
  • Students passed out from this department with very good result.
  • Many passed out students pursued higher education in different universities all over India and some of are engaged in different types of jobs.

Courses and Syllabus

Courses Offered: 

  • Undergraduate Programs: The department offers a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Geology. Presently the department is offering NEP courses in Geology. The program covers key topics such as Mineralogy, Petrology, Structural geology and Tectonics, Oceanography and Climatology, Economic geology, Engineering geology, Surveying, Stratigraphy and Paleontology ,Geomorphology, Geochemistry, Geophysics, Coal and Petroleum Geology, Hydrogeology, Remote Sensing and GIS, Environmental Geology, Geology of NE India, integrating both theoretical and practical components.
  • Add-on Courses (Skill enhancement courses): The department organizes specialized field training, and seminars to enhance students’ practical skills and keep them updated with the latest geological advancements.
  • Internship: Internship provided to students in geology related fields in government department, educational institutions and non-government organizations.
  • Fieldwork Opportunities: Students are regularly involved in field-based studies, which provide hands-on experience in geological field study and mapping.

  • Presented a Paper on “Tribal Movement in North East India With Special Reference to the Zelingrog Movement (1930-32)” in UGC Sponsored National Seminar on Problems and Prospects of Ethnic Communities of India with Special Reference to North East India,18th and 19thJanuary 2012, Organized by Dept. of Anthropology, Dibru College in collaboration with District Research office, Dibrugarh.
  • Presented a Paper on “Film as Mass Media and its Impact on Society” in National Seminar on Mass Media and Society on 13-14 May 2014, organized by Dept. of English and Sociolology, Dikhowmukh College in collaboration with Dikhowmukh Press Club.
