Department Of Assamese

About the Department

The Assamese language, which is included in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India, originated from Sanskrit and has a rich history spanning over 1,500 years. Specimens  of Assamese script date back to the 4th century A.D., and its literature boasts a vibrant heritage beginning from the 8th century A.D. Assamese language and literature are studied across educational institutions in Assam, as well as at Delhi University, Calcutta University, and Visva-Bharati University. Notably, on October 3, the Union Cabinet granted Classical Language status to Assamese, marking a significant milestone in its recognition and preservation.

The Department of Assamese at Dibru College has been active since the college’s establishment in 1963. A Major Course in Assamese was introduced in 1972. In addition to teaching language, literature, and culture, the faculty organizes talks, seminars, and group discussions to enrich student learning. The introduction of Comparative Indian Literature as part of the curriculum has added a new dimension to the academic exploration of Assamese language and literature. The department is considered one of the most vibrant within the college.

In line with the recommendations of the last NAAC Peer Team visit, Dibru College applied to introduce a Postgraduate (PG) Course under the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) in affiliation with Dibrugarh University. The inspection was completed on May 26, 2022, and the university granted affiliation approval on June 2, 2022, vide letter no. DU/RG/IOC/2022/PG./Permission/DC/1396 dated June 16, 2022.
