Welcome to the Department of Sociology Dibru College, Department was started in 1996 as a subject and major was started in 2017.

About the Department:

The Department of Sociology at Dibru College, Dibrugarh, was established in 1996 with the introduction of Sociology as a subject in the undergraduate curriculum. In response to growing academic demand and the need to offer a more specialized academic path, the department began offering Sociology as a Major from 2017. Since its inception, the department has been committed to providing quality education in Sociology, fostering critical thinking, and promoting an understanding of social dynamics and cultural diversity. Our curriculum is designed to give students a strong foundation in sociological theories, research methods, and contemporary social issues. The department aims to cultivate a holistic understanding of society, social structures, and human behavior, equipping students with the skills necessary to analyze and address the challenges faced by individuals and communities in the modern world.

Faculty:

The Department of Sociology is staffed with dedicated and experienced faculty members who are passionate about teaching and research. Our faculty members bring a diverse range of academic expertise and are actively involved in research and academic discourse, both at the regional and national levels. They are committed to providing students with personalized guidance and mentorship to foster their intellectual growth and critical engagement with sociological topics.

Research and Outreach:

The department is actively involved in research in various subfields of Sociology, including but not limited to, community studies, gender issues, rural and urban development, and the socio-economic aspects of Northeast India. Faculty and students collaborate on research projects that aim to contribute to the social well-being of the region.

Vision: To be a preeminent sociology department that develops researchers, critical thinkers, and socially conscious individuals who can comprehend and tackle the intricacies of modern society.

Mission:

– Our mission is to offer top-notch sociology instruction with a focus on both theoretical understanding and real-world application.

-To encourage students’ ethical responsibility, societal awareness, and critical thinking.

-To promote studies on current social concerns that emphasize the local and regional context.

-To use sociological viewpoints to advance sustainable and inclusive development.

2023 – A total of four (4) students got selection for pursuing M.Sc. in Physics, one each at Assam University Silchar, Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology and Tezpur University, Tezpur.

2024 – A total of four (4) students got selection for pursuing M.Sc. in Physics, one each at Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology, Hyderabad Central University and DHSK College, Dibrugarh.

2025 – A total of three (3) students has got selected for pursuing M.Sc. in Physics, all at Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh.

Academic Programmes:

Undergraduate Programme (BA in Sociology):

The department offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Sociology, with Major options. The Major Programme, introduced in 2017, provides students with an in-depth understanding of sociological concepts, theories, and research methodologies. The curriculum includes subjects such as, Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Perspectives, Sociology of India, Sociological Thinkers, Methods of Sociological Enquiry, Sociological Research Methods, Social Stratification, Economy and Society, Sociology of Kinship, Political Sociology, Urban Sociology, Rural

Sociology, Sociology of Religion, Sociology of North East India, Gender Studies, and Environmental Sociology, among others. In addition to academic research, the department also engages with local communities through outreach programs and awareness campaigns on social issues, which further reinforce our commitment to applied sociology.

Infrastructure and Facilities:

The department is equipped with modern teaching aids, including a well-stocked library with a collection of books, journals, and research papers in Sociology. We also provide students with access to digital resources and research databases to aid their academic development. Regular seminars, workshops, and guest lectures are organized to expose students to new ideas, trends, and developments in the field of Sociology.
