About the Department

The Department of Bengali was established in the year 1967, marking a significant step towards fostering regional language and literature in higher education. Over the decades, the department has contributed to promoting Bengali literary studies. Initially offering general courses, the department expanded its academic scope by introducing the Major (Honours) Programme in Bengali in 2023, under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP), in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The first Head of the Department was Mr. Khitish Chandra Roy, who laid the foundation for a strong academic and cultural tradition. In the years that followed, the department was enriched by the scholarly contributions of dedicated faculty members such as Ms. Anjali Bhagchi, Ms. Rupdutta Roy, and Ms. Sunetra Banerjee. Their collective efforts ensured the department’s continued growth and relevance in changing academic contexts. At present, the department is led by Dr. Moumita Paul who continues to uphold its legacy while introducing contemporary academic practices and encouraging learning.

 

Objectives of the Department

  • To impart quality education in Bengali language and literature.
  • To cultivate literary sensibility and cultural awareness among students.
  • To promote the exploration of folk, modern, and classical Bengali literary traditions.

 

Mission of the Department

The mission of the Department of Bengali is to nurture a learning environment that respects linguistic diversity, promotes cultural understanding, and empowers students to become informed and sensitive individuals. The department aims to equip learners with knowledge and skills that help them grow both intellectually and socially.

 

Vision of the Department

The department envisions becoming a vibrant centre for Bengali literary studies by:

  • Integrating traditional and modern literary discourses.
  • Encouraging research and publication in language and literature.
  • Enhancing the employability of students through skill-based training in language and communication.

 

2023 – A total of four (4) students got selection for pursuing M.Sc. in Physics, one each at Assam University Silchar, Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology and Tezpur University, Tezpur.

2024 – A total of four (4) students got selection for pursuing M.Sc. in Physics, one each at Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology, Hyderabad Central University and DHSK College, Dibrugarh.

2025 – A total of three (3) students has got selected for pursuing M.Sc. in Physics, all at Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh.

Courses and Syllabus

The Department of Physics, Dibru College is currently offering Four Year Undergraduate Programme in Physics (B.Sc. in Physics) under NEP-2020. The syllabus can easily be downloaded from Dibrugarh University Website.

Courses Offered under FYUGP

  1. Bengali Major (Honours)
    A comprehensive programme focusing on classical, modern, and contemporary literature, linguistics, literary criticism, and translation studies. It includes research projects and thematic electives in the final year.
  2. Bengali Minor
    Designed for students pursuing majors in other disciplines. This programme introduces core literary texts, language skills, and cultural studies.
  3. Ability Enhancement Course (AEC)
    Offered to first-year students opting for Bengali as MIL. It focuses on grammar, communication, reading, and writing skills.
  4. Skill Enhancement Course (SEC)
    Practical and career-oriented courses such as creative writing, translation, editing, and media writing are offered in later semesters.
