ABOUT THE COLLEGE

 DIBRU COLLEGE, DIBRUGARH - Estd: 1963




The college is situated just on the outskirts of Dibrugarh town which is a rural area under the Lahoal Constituency. It is 7 Km from the airport and 2 km away from the railway station. The total area of the college is 1.98 acres and the construction area is    sq mts. It has all the three faculties viz: Arts, Science and Commerce. There are two sections Morning and Day with total student strength of around two thousand. The student pattern of the institution is such that 80% of its enrollment belongs to either ST/ST or OBC/MOBC communities. The college has a fully furnished Library, Gymnasium, Canteen, Day Care Centre, and Student Union office.

Established in 1980, the Dibru College Staff Co-operative society (Registered under Societies Regulation Act) which is a nonprofit organization has been instrumental for the welfare of teaching and non-teaching staff members. It has been highly praised by the NAAC Peer team.

The Department of Biotechnology, Government of India sponsored Bio-Tech. Hub has been established in the college in 2011. In addition to regular courses the college also imparts professional courses on computer skill.

COLLEGE HISTORY

DIBRU COLLEGE, DIBRUGARH - ESTD. - 16 AUGUST 1963




The growth of higher education in this eastern most district of India received a new dimension with the establishment of the Dibrugarh College which ultimately became nucleus of the present group of Kanoi Colleges in the town of Dibrugarh. This removed a long felt pressing demand of the people to a large extent. The dawn of independence in India and the new urge and opportunities created by it widened the scope of higher educational facilities. More number of people hither to deprive of this privilege aspired to receive the blessing of higher education.

With the growth of new educational complex in the Dibrugarh town it was also felt that there should be an independent educational institution of a status of Degree College wholly sponsored and patronised by the general public of the town. In the light of this urge some enthusiastic young men led by Shri N.L.Borgohain, Saifuddin Ahmed, Keshab Sharma, Sri Sarat Borkakaty and others took momentous decision to start a new college and accordingly, a public meeting was convened by Sri N.L.Borgohain at Amolapatty Natya Mandir, on 25th Sept 1962. The college started functioning with effect from 16th August 1963, as the Dibru College, in the premises of the George Institution, Dibrugarh and later on to its own premises. The Govt. of Assam brought the college under Deficit system of Grant-in-aid in 1972.

The College Emblem is just like a shield, meaning the symbol of protection. The burning lamp in the centre signifies the despoiler of darkness and spreading of the light of knowledge. The 'Rajhansa' and the 'Veena' represent “Saraswati” the source of knowledge.
